Nina Corvus, 12/07/2020 This is a series of journals recording my days in the Yangtze River Headwaters volunteering project. I will try to update every day but there might be delays in the days I work in the wild without the internet. I’m also trying to write bilingual if time allows. Like it? Follow my Instagram (@anar.chica.yichenguo) for updates! 喜欢的话,关注我的Ins账号(@anar.chica.yichenguo)获取更新吧! I used to dream about human beings all migrate to high altitude areas to escape from climate change. I was wrong. The climate change at these areas is not much better than in the low altitude areas. Too many wildlife’s habitats are affected, as well as their breedings. It’s been raining several times every day since I came to Bende Lake. Today after lunch a snow storm suddenly hit this area. It turned into hail after a few minutes, and another few minutes later, it became rain. It lasted only ten minutes until the rain stopped. However, the poor terns’ eggs were drown again. You can’t blame them for being stupid to build their nest in pits, not like human beings (with normal IQ), setting up tents where it’s not easy to accumulate water. After all, according to the staff here, normal summers like the one last year, may rain no more than four times in a month. So far, all the offsprings of the terns are dead. The eggs were drown too many times because of the usual number of rains. Only one baby came out of the egg. But soon dead the second due to the rain at the night of its birth. After today’s storm, the family that had three eggs finally gave up completely, leaving only one couple holding on to their only egg. But we all know the egg must have gone bad already since it’s drown in water so many times and for so long. The great crested grebes have gone through the same tragedy. Last year they successfully raised a few nests of babies. However, this year, so far, they haven’t had one baby out of shell either. Their nests are built on the water surface. All seven or eight nests observed here this year a while ago were destroyed by rain. Most of the nests we just found these days survived today’s storm. I hope they won’t get such frequent and fierce destruction any more. And regarding to the influence to us, the temperature difference during one day is even bigger now. As long as the sun’s out, it is definitely for shorts. But even though it is the hottest time of year, we are almost freezing to death every morning and even all the way before noon. Here is far far away from the outside world. There is no cell phone signal (but for work we have good wifi), no tap water, no municipal electricity. The solar power board can only provide power enough for the lightings and facilities for work. Nothing’s left for keeping warm. Our guys here think about such things on daily basis: there’s no cow shit left, we shall collect more, otherwise we can’t get through tonight. Horse shit is also fine. The sun’s good in the afternoon. We should dry them. Global climate change seems to be an unavoidable catastrophe after all. PS. I encountered the most marvellous rainbow in my life today! Living Out bilingualChineseenvironmentjournaltravelvolunteer
